Death is an event that is difficult for a child to understand and accept. However, in this sensitively illustrated story, the death of her grandfather is gradually accepted by a young girl when she sees the bulul he lovingly carved and left behind for her.

Magtanim ay Di Biro

Magtanim ay Di Biro

Adarna House, Publisher
Jamie Bauza, Illustrator

English: The eerie and mysterious cover invites readers to grab the book and follow the harrowing story about tokhang. The distinct dark art style reinforces the horror story about the drug war. In the darkness that enveloped the community of Sitio San Nikolas, people bravely banded together to face the “Knockers.”

Cely’s Crocodile:

The Art and Story of Araceli Limcaco Dans

Tahanan Books for Young Readers, Publisher
Gabriela Dans Lee, Writer
Adrian Panadero, Illustrator

A young girl teaches herself to draw when her father brings home a crocodile. She realizes she sees things other people don't see, and that she can draw to tell stories, and so she does. Here is a story of an artist's persistence set in the context of larger historical events. We're drawn into the Japanese invasion, her involvement in the guerilla movement through her drawing, the darkness of the war, and finally, the persistence of her vision: her art is needed "in times of war and in times of peace.

Paalam, Puti

Anvil, Publisher
Jomike Tejido, Writer & Illustrator

Lampara Books, Publisher
Glenda Oris, Writer
Beth Parrocha, Illustrator

The lush and intricate illustrations enhance this exciting historical saga of our country. This is done in the illustrated novel format our teenagers are familiar with. It would be great if more of our history books are presented in this format to engage this present generation of students.

A Kid’s Guide to Data Privacy

CANVAS, Publisher
Gigo Alampay, Writer
Liza Flores, Abi Goy, Frances Alvarez, and Jamie Bauza, Illustrator

Data privacy is a serious and hard-to-explain topic, especially to kids. Fortunately, this book published by Canvas did not shy away from this task, and even succeeded beyond expectation. The choice of words, illustrations and activities are very engaging and thoughtful. The tone — matter-of-fact and direct — is respectful of its audience. We need more of these informative, well-made and timely books.

CANVAS, Publisher
Gigo Alampay, Writer
Liza Flores, Abi Goy, Frances Alvarez, and Jamie Bauza, Illustrator

We are in an age of information explosion, and with it comes the dangers of being exposed to both misinformation and disinformation. Children and the youth are often susceptible to this. There must be a way by which they can learn to be more critical of what they read or see on the internet. YouThink: Fight Fake News is a zine-style activity book that comes in handy as young people navigate through this very complicated world. It can also help teachers find ways of bringing critical literacy in the classroom.

Tinola ni Nanay

Tinola ni Nanay

Hiyas-OMF Literature, Publisher
Maloi Malibiran-Salumbides, Writer
Felix Mago Miguel, Illustrator
