Ino is fascinated by his mother’s shiny sewing machine. As he watches and listens, she threads the needle and tells him the story of the mákináng makináng that has been in his family for generations. Ino wonders if he, too, can carry on their tradition.
Genaro Gojo Cruz’s 2016 PBBY-Salanga Prize story, Mákináng Makináng, was published in 2018 by Adarna House.
Mr. Gojo Cruz is a prize-winning children’s book author and a professor at De La Salle University and Philippine Normal University. He won an honorable mention in the Salanga twice before in 2004 and 2014.
Four other writers received an honorable mention this year: Joseph Salazar for his story, “Kung Bakit Hindi Nagsasalita si Kabunian”; John Paolo Sandicho for his story, “May Dalawang Dulo ang Puso ni Papa”; Leila Francesca Maligalig for her story “Dandelions”; and, Jacqueline Franquelli for her story, “Kindat, Kindat.”
