Tala lives at the House of Hope Orphanage. But she isn’t an orphan! The only way her parents will find her is if she joins the televised, nationwide gameshow Laro ng Lahi. Boon Kristoffer Lauw’s novel about a feisty girl’s search for her parents, “Team Abangers at ang Estilong Trumpo,” won the 2020 PBBY-Salanga Prize. The book will be released by Lampara Publishing House in 2021.
Mr. Lauw hails from General Santos City. He is a chemical engineer who teaches ADTech2 at the Philippine Science High School. He took part in the 3rd Amelia Lapeña Bonifacio Writers’ Workshop last 2018 and was a part of the UP Likhaan Institute of Creative Writing.
This is the first time in the history of the Salanga Prize that the contest focused on chapter books. Garnering an honourable mention this year are Raissa Falgui for “Diva Diwatas” and Tamara Mosqueda for “Kayo and the Anitos.”
Awarded at the 37th National Children’s Book Day celebration on July 21, 2020.
